The legacy of apartheid in South Africa has resulted in widespread social injustice and imbalances in the distribution of power, wealth and equal access to opportunities. Decades of oppression and social restructuring have negatively impacted the nation’s social and cultural fabric and promoted a culture of dependency and ignorance of the disadvantaged race groups.
South Africa is home to the largest number of people living with HIV and Aids in the world, with current estimates putting the figure at over five million. Without interventions to reduce mortality, the number of people who will die from AIDS related illnesses is estimated to peak in 2010 with 800,000 AIDS related deaths predicted for that year alone. Everyone, irrespective of age, culture or social status is affected by HIV and Aids.
In order to save another generation from the devastating impact of this pandemic, there is a dire need to act now. Alternatives and opportunities must be presented to those infected and affected by HIV and Aids to change their lives positively. It is therefore imperative to reach the poorest of the poor who do not have access to the privileges that would enhance their health, lives and livelihoods and consequently, the next generation.
The RivLife Community Centre objectives and activities is to alleviate human suffering within vulnerable communities.
